Antwerpen +Rue de Art Nouveau +Brugge +Bruxelles +Fun and Friendship

Belgium is a whole new world... the people are the most friendly of any place we have traveled, the food is ohmylanta delicious, and the architecture and gardens are full of history. It truly was one of those places I took pause and just relaxed. Our hosts, Sven Moresi and Stephanie Rosseneu were wonderful! They introduced us to the real Belgium, by teaching us how to speak Flemish and guiding us around, then giving us wings to explore ourselves. The Flemish are highly civilized and they love Americans, especially the ones who love peace, like us. Our base was in Antwerp, or Antwerpen as it is called there. We loved Antwerpen since it was not a huge tourist driven society, although, it surely could be. Most everyone there understands English and are thrilled to have an opportunity to help or just talk. They are a prideful people who simply like to be normal.... nothing outlandish, garish, or crazy, "just be normal" as Sven would often remind us.

We spent almost three weeks in Antwerpen, which allowed us to move about the country and see the UNESCO World Heritage sites, plus other sites of importance to Belgium and Europe. Antwerpen was by far my favorite, but we did enjoy Lier, Brugge, and Brussels, too. The Flemish have certain customs which are amazing, yet simple. When you order a Belgium coffee (yum), this delicious brew is always, without fail, served with a cookie, biscuit or world famous Belgium chocolate. It is a great bonus to we Americans who are used to paying too much for everything! Another Flemish way is to salt and pepper one's buttered bread. Let me tell you, this changes the entire flavor--it is simple and delicious. When toasting, not only do you look one another in the eye, but after clinking the bowl of the glass, the Flemish clink the base---for good luck. It is simple, but again, lovely. Tipping one's waiter is also very different than in the US. There and pretty much in all over Europe, waiters are paid by the restaurant and by how many tables they serve, a tip is just that, a tip... gratuity. They do not expect it nor do they require it to feel appreciated. A bit of change, or a couple of Euros will do just fine. When in Rome....

Below are some of the photos from Michael's visual diary. He loved photographing our trip. As with our other travel pages, if you are thinking about visiting Belgium, and have a question, I am happy to help. You may email me and I'll do my best to find your answer.

Rue de Art Nouveau

This area of Antwerpen is a must see... these buildings are perfect examples of Art Nouveau architecture. After years and years of neglect this street has become one of the prestige areas of Antwerpen, . It is a miracle that this street survived the utter destruction of Hitler during the end of WWII. Instead of leaving peacefully he bombed Antwerp and left next to nothing of the historical buildings. Antwerpen is a relatively newly constructed city, and at this very moment she is undergoing mass infrastructure improvements. The first buildings on this street were designed by Dutch architect, Jules Hofman. Each building was a tribute to a flower (rose, lily, sunflower, etc.) Originally built for business men who needed extended residential type accommodations, none were equipped with heat or toilets. This is especially hard to believe since they were so well constructed. Today, they are fully appointed.
