Indah Bulan Visits England

~ Indah Bulan Visits England ~
These photos are of interesting landscape feature that struck my fancy. The collection is from both public and private gardens. Having studied the work of England's first Landscape Architect, Capability Brown; during this trip, we spent much of our time in gardens he designed. Basically his philosophy was that a garden (now we are talking massive estates) should solve problems but look untouched by man. Even in city gardens this Earthy approach to gardens stills holds true. English gardens are perhaps the most popular because they tend to be organized, yet appear that they could be natural. I particularly enjoyed the use of twigs to create a trellis or fence of some kind. Another famous design feature of Capability Brown is the "Ha Ha Wall". In his day, the only lawn mowers were sheep and cattle. In order to keep the grazers from eating too much around the actual estate and more importantly to protect the view of the countryside, Capability created the ha ha wall. A brilliant yet simple feature. The ha ha wall is a retaining wall separating the area close to the estate from the vast country side--but it does not rise above the view so it remains hidden. This simple feature kept the grazers from the estate, but did not break up the view. (photo below). Today, England has a new Capability Brown via The Prince of Wales. Prince Charles is an amazing environmentalist---and he was doing it before anyone else! His private residence "Highgrove" is a testament to organic landscape architecture. He has become a mentor of mine. I have much respect for the man who bucked the system in favor of all things natural.
