Sidewalk becomes part of garden
Karen and Ruben Project....

Glendale, California

View of how Indah Bulan incorporated the existing sidewalk into the garden. The median becomes part of the big picture.

FIELD NOTES:

Karen and Ruben bought and fixed this house up for Karen's parents. (What a lovely gift!) We designed the front garden, back garden, and helped them modify the colors on the house... all to kudos from the neighbors! Our main goal was to not only make a garden that would be very easy to maintain, but also a garden that was elder-friendly. We achieved this by regrading all the sidewalks, enlarging steps, and using rounded or bull-nose brick. In addition, we planned a lighting scheme that would accent and illuminate, without distracting from the garden. (One should never see where the light comes from!... it should just be there!) We designed an entry court so that it will be easier to exit the car, and be a lovely welcome "home". In the case of the bland architecture, we hand built a trellis of brass wire around the large picture window in the front of the house. On this trellis, we planted Star Jasmine, because it is evergreen, and the fragrant blooms are white... our garden accent color. All the photos below are taken right after it was planted. We hope to have an update soon!

Planting area is adjacent to pool for tropical effect. Also, tropicals have been planted against a dark "black iron" colored wall. The black provides depth.... especially when the plants fill in!
elegant black bamboo---it is contained in a planter though!
Elegant Black Bamboo! It is a runner, so you must contain it in a planter or planting pot! YOU MUST!
