Kim Clarkin Residence....

Claremont, California

FIELD NOTES:

Virtually all of our clients have come to us via other clients, which makes us quite proud. (And no advertising, too!) Kim Clarkin, who is a friend of Linda Lee Worlow (The Little Grey House). Kim, who is an avid environmentalist, and minimalist had a strong idea of what she wanted before she even called Indah Bulan. She lives in the Live Oak Canyon area of Claremont, which is filled with majestic old California Live Oaks. She is 100% on board for a no water garden. Her garden, although scattered with an occasional fruit tree is a charming natural retreat on its own, but she did want to have some way to have unity in her garden by way of a pathway system. Her guidelines for us were to take a journey from the front door to the back door through her garden. We used Claremont potatoes to line the path, which are the native rocks found all over the foothills, and we used decomposed granite for the paving. Decomposed granite is a fantastic, affordable material, which is pulverized granite. The amazing thing about this material is its ability to compact and become firm like concrete. It also comes in a few different colors. In addition to the path way system, we converted an old shed into a "Bungung" (an alfresco Balinese house). This is where she likes to entertain her guests, and just be in the garden relaxing or reading a book. Below are some photos of her pathway system and the Bungung.
