Judy and David Tanenbaum Residence....

Claremont, California

FIELD NOTES:

This charming young couple came to us via their neighbor, Linda Lee Worlow. Our only instruction from Judy was to create a low maintenance garden and to reduce the amount of lawn in the front. That's just what we did! We removed every bit of the water-thirsty grass, and designed a garden that would not only truly be low maintenance, but would add some character to their fantastic Spanish home, set in Claremont's Historic "Village" area. The streets are lined with California Live Oaks, which was a great inspiration to not plant things that would require watering in the summer. By choosing two main plants and using them in mass plantings, we achieve the same effect as a lawn. In addition, if a weed does germinate, it is easily recognizable. We spent about 3 weeks removing the lawn, to make sure that Judy was not surprised by lots of grass returning to her new garden. For materials, we used the native rocks found in the foothills of Southern California, and decomposed granite. Our thoughtful design was to expand the small walkway leading to the front door and create an entry court feel without the expense of heavy hardscape construction. What we designed is historically accurate and works perfectly in historic Claremont. The path design is basically an infinity symbol or figure eight. There are two islands for planting and they are filled with different varieties of succulents. It is a charming addition to the house. Next, we are having the house painted historic colors that will reduce glare, and put the Hacienda in Spanish architecture. Photos coming soon!

Tanenbaum Residence Before
BEFORE: removed all grass! 100% gone!
Tanenbaum Residence After
AFTER: Used native rock and succulents to create an unthirsty stylish garden. Just Planted!

Path way system provides graceful movement to this dry landscape.

Water-Wise Gardening. By using only a two main varieties of succulents, we achieved a low maintenance garden.

The use of berms offers the garden movement, within the two berm areas we used a variety of specimen succulents--all selected for easy growth, color and contrasting foliage.

Claremont potatoes, as they are called here. The Native rocks make a perfect planting border under the California Live Oak Trees. Planting pots were used as accents at the entrances and in one of the berms (in front of the picture window).

Young succulents will fill in and become a lush green mass.
